CCC Restorative Justice Committee to Launch “The Shalom Project” to Honor Late Chair Bishop David O’Connell
In the days and weeks before his tragic death, Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell worked closely with the Restorative Justice Standing Committee to the California Catholic Conference of Bishops on “The Shalom Project”, his vision to bring healing to a community that suffered in isolation for so long because of COVID-19. As chair of the Committee for five years, it was his desire to create an online space to cast a wide web into the hearts of the People of God yearning for peace in a world divided by grief and fear. Bishop O’Connell firmly believed the path to peace was rooted in the Gospels. He frequently taught a Gospel Reflection Process, which we have decided to move forward with sharing in his honor.
As an Irish immigrant whose boots landed in the streets of Los Angeles 45 years ago, Bishop O’Connell became a proud Angeleno committed to bringing hope and healing to a city plagued by crime and violence. In it, he served as a beacon of hope in the community and took a particular interest in tending to those who struggled to overcome the impact of violent crime. He responded to the needs of those who had been harmed as well as those responsible for causing harm, and he called upon the community of faith to minister to each and create opportunities to heal for all impacted.
A peacemaker, and a man of justice, Bishop O’Connell worked to bring all people into “right relationship” with God and one another. He befriended them, counseled them, prayed for them, and loved them. He went to where there was injury in need of God’s love and accompanied the wounded in his midst. That he died at the hands of another seems unimaginable. Still, it begs a just response—a response that considers all those impacted and works to bring healing and peace to all. A just response as modeled by his beloved friend and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Join us for the “The Shalom Project” in honor of Bishop O’Connell. All are welcome to this online event beginning Tuesday, March 21 at 6:00 PM Pacific. This will be the first in a series of peace building skills workshops coming this year, working in collaboration with our Diocesan Restorative Justice Directors and Santa Clara University.

El Comité de Justicia Restaurativa de la CCC iniciará el "Proyecto Shalom" en honor de su difunto presidente, el Obispo David O'Connell
En los días y semanas anteriores a su trágica muerte, el Obispo Auxiliar David O'Connell trabajó en estrecha colaboración con el Comité Permanente de Justicia Restaurativa de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de California en “El Proyecto Shalom”, su visión para llevar la sanación a una comunidad que sufrió en aislamiento durante tanto tiempo a causa del COVID-19. Como presidente del Comité durante cinco años, era su deseo crear un espacio en línea para lanzar una amplia red a los corazones del Pueblo de Dios que anhela la paz en un mundo dividido por el dolor y el miedo. El obispo O'Connell creía firmemente que el camino hacia la paz estaba arraigado en los Evangelios. Con frecuencia enseñaba un Proceso de Reflexión sobre el Evangelio que hemos decidido seguir compartiendo en su honor.
Como inmigrante irlandés cuyas botas aterrizaron en las calles de Los Ángeles hace 45 años, el obispo O'Connell se convirtió en un orgulloso angelino comprometido a llevar esperanza y sanación a una ciudad plagada de delincuencia y violencia. En ella, sirvió como faro de esperanza en la comunidad y se interesó especialmente por atender a quienes luchaban por superar el impacto de la delincuencia violenta. Respondió a las necesidades de quienes habían sufrido daños, así como a las de los responsables de haberlos causado, e hizo un llamado a la comunidad de fe para que atendiera a cada uno de ellos y creara oportunidades de sanación para todos los afectados.
Como conciliador y hombre de justicia, el obispo O'Connell trabajó para que todas las personas tuvieran una "relación justa" con Dios y entre sí. Se hizo amigo de las personas, las aconsejó, rezó por ellas y las amó. Acudía a los lugares donde había agraviados necesitados del amor de Dios y acompañaba a las personas lastimadas en su entorno.. Que muriera por la mano de otro parece inimaginable. Sin embargo, exige una respuesta justa, una respuesta que tenga en cuenta a todos los afectados y trabaje para llevar la sanación y la paz a todos. Una respuesta justa según el modelo de su amado amigo y Salvador, Jesucristo.
